Radio Frequency Microneedling

What Is Radio Frequency Microneedling?
The Next Evolution of Microneedling - With Radio Frequency Microneedling

Radio Frequency Microneedling is a minimally invasive skin rejuvenation treatment that elevates standard microneedling to an entirely new level of efficacy by adding a second mechanism: controlled radiofrequency (RF) heat energy delivered directly into the dermis through the needle tips at the moment of penetration.

Standard microneedling works by creating micro-injuries that trigger the wound-healing cascade and collagen production. RF microneedling does all of that and simultaneously delivers controlled thermal energy to the deep dermis that produces immediate collagen fibre contraction (a rapid tightening effect) and a more robust, longer-lasting collagen remodelling stimulus than needling alone.

The treatment is suitable for all skin types and tones, including darker Fitzpatrick skin types because insulated needles deliver the RF energy at the dermis rather than the epidermis, protecting melanocytes and making it significantly safer than ablative laser for darker complexions.

The Dual Technology

How Microneedling and Radiofrequency Work Together?

Understanding both technologies explains why Radio Frequency Microneedling produces results that neither approach could achieve on its own.

The Microneedling Component

The device delivers ultra-fine needles to precise, adjustable depths in the skin. Each needle creates a controlled micro-channel — a micro-injury that triggers the skin's three-phase wound healing response: inflammation → proliferation → remodelling. During the remodelling phase, temporary Type III collagen is replaced with stronger Type I collagen, progressively tightening and improving the structural integrity of the treated skin.

The Radiofrequency Component

Simultaneously with needle penetration, controlled RF energy is released at the needle tips precisely within the dermal layer. This radiofrequency heat produces two effects that microneedling alone cannot: immediate contraction of existing collagen fibres (producing visible tightening within days rather than weeks) and an enhanced, deeper collagen remodelling stimulus that surpasses the wound-healing response from needling alone.

What to Expect

RF Microneedling Results Timeline

Treatment Day - Initial Redness & Swelling

Redness and mild swelling similar to a moderate sunburn for 24–72 hours. This is the expected inflammatory response confirming the wound healing cascade has been activated. Adding Dermalux LED post-treatment significantly reduces this initial response.

1–2 Weeks - First Visible Tightening

The RF thermal contraction of collagen fibres produces early visible skin tightening within the first 1–2 weeks — faster than standard microneedling. Skin texture begins to refine as the proliferation phase builds new granulation tissue.

4–8 Weeks - Visible Improvement

Collagen remodelling is producing new Type I collagen. Acne scars are visibly less deep. Fine lines are softer. Pores appear refined. Skin firmness is measurably improved. Most clients notice significant positive comments from friends and family at this stage.

3–6 Months Post-Course - Maximum Results

The collagen remodelling process continues for up to 6 months after the final session. Full results including maximum skin tightening, scar improvement and pore refinement are realised during this window. Results can last 1–2 years with maintenance.

Radio Frequency Microneedling : Frequently Asked Questions

A topical numbing cream is applied before treatment, making the procedure very tolerable for most clients. During the treatment, clients typically report feeling a warmth and mild pressure sensation. The RF energy adds a warm, slightly intense feeling compared to standard microneedling, but this is well-managed with the numbing cream. Ian adjusts the settings to your comfort level throughout.

Morpheus8 is a specific branded RF microneedling device. RF microneedling is the broader category of treatment that Morpheus8 belongs to there are multiple professional RF microneedling devices on the market, all working on the same dual microneedling + RF energy principle. Ian uses a professional RF microneedling device at his Walton-on-Thames clinic and advises on the optimal settings and protocol for your specific concerns.

Yes – RF microneedling is highly effective for body skin concerns including stretch marks, loose abdominal skin, arm and thigh laxity, and scarring anywhere on the body. The needle depth and RF energy settings are adjusted appropriately for the thicker skin of the body. At £199 per area, Ian treats both facial and body areas.

RF microneedling delivers energy through needles into the upper-to-mid dermis, combining collagen induction and thermal remodelling for texture, scars and moderate tightening. HIFU (High Intensity Focused Ultrasound) delivers energy non-invasively to deeper tissue layers including the SMAS producing deeper lifting effects. Ian offers both treatments and advises on the right choice at consultation.

Avoid sun exposure, retinoids, blood-thinning medications and alcohol for 48 hours before treatment. Come with clean, make-up free skin. Ian will apply numbing cream approximately 30 minutes before the procedure. After treatment, follow Ian’s personalised aftercare protocol avoiding sun exposure, active skincare ingredients and swimming for the recommended recovery period.
